The Origin of Leheriya Sarees

Leheriya is the traditional form of tie-dye clothing which is been practiced in Rajasthan specially in Udaipur, Jaipur, and Jodhpur. The name is derived from the word 'leher' which means wave. The zigzag pattern of irregular color stripes on Leheriya Saree is a visual representation of the flowing water and attracts the eyes instantly. It is a symbol of a bountiful harvest which also marks the onset of monsoon. It holds great cultural importance for women as it brings good luck and blessings. These are traditional popular sarees of Rajasthan. For many years, the leheria was a style that exclusively belonged to the Marwari community in Rajasthan.

Art of Leheriya Print

The art of making leheriya is intricate and complex. Here's an overview of the making of leheriya.

  • A special method known as 'resist-dyeing' is used in the process of making leheriya.
  • For this purpose a light color cloth is used, generally in cotton, silk, chiffon or georgette fabric.
  • The process involves rolling the fabric and tying resists or knots at various spots on the cloth. It is then rolled diagonally from one corner to the opposite end.
  • This rolled fabric is then dyed as per the regular tie and dye process in bright colors.
  • The tie and dye ensure that the color penetrates to the innermost portions in the rolls of the fabric.
  • Post-dyeing, a striped pattern or zig-zag lines are created on the cloth at intervals with color on every alternate stripe.
  • Multiple ties and dye processes are undergone if required, to create countless colorful stripes across the fabric length.
  • In the last stage of the process, Indigo is used to secure the fastness and durability of the applied colors.
  • White is the most common base color on which leheriya is done.
  • The whole or part of the fabric is dyed in different colors to give a multicolor effect to leheriya sarees. This gives an altogether different grace and style to the woman wearing it.

Variety and Innovations

Lehariya is characterized by a wave's pattern made of Traditional Dyes. Leheriya is available in different types of fabrics like chiffon, crepe, georgette, cotton, Kota Doria, zari, and silk, etc. You can get varieties in leheriya pattern depending upon the creativity and skill of a worker. Hence every fabric gets a new look, with vivid colors, fresh patterns, and vibrant designs. Since leheriya prints are usually created on soft and light fabrics, it is preferred in regions with a warmer climate.

In the early days, leheriya work was primarily done on head turbans in Rajasthan. Gradually, the leheriya style was introduced in dupattas, lehenga choli, salwar kameez, and sarees. Generally, women in Rajasthan wear leheriya sarees during the famous Gangour and Teej festivals. Nowadays, you can see that leheriya is a part of both outfits and accessories.
